Counseling

I have provided clinical services for adults and adolescents with sensitivity regarding culture, race, sexual preference, and gender identity for over 30 years.

All clients have in common one motivating factor for seeking therapy: each seeks help identifying and implementing solutions to a problem or undesirable situation that will most effectively enhance the quality of their life and the lives of those they love.

The counseling process, or individual psychotherapy, allows you to confidentially and safely explore your feelings, beliefs, and behavior, to work through hurtful or frightening memories, to identify aspects of your life that you would like to change, or to better understand yourself or others...and these are a generalized 'short list' of motivating factors.

The frequency and duration of therapy depends on your treatment plan goals, and the length of time the process of achieving those goals may take.

Some goals are easily resolved with short-term therapy. Other goals may be addressing more complex concerns or chronic situations that may require a longer-term commitment to achieve resolution.

Adult vs Adolescent Therapy

THE ADOLESCENT - AN INTERESTING QUOTE

“They now seem to love luxury, they have bad manners and contempt for authority, they show disrespect for adults and spend their time hanging around places gossiping with one another. They are ready to contradict their parents, monopolize the conversation and company, eat gluttonously and tyrannize their teachers .”  Socrates - 400 B.C.

The “troubled teen years” are as normal as the “terrible twos.”

The years from the age of thirteen through nineteen are highly charged with physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that might be extremely difficult for both teens and their parents to navigate.

Teenagers will experience significant cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes during their teen years;  some adapt to changes with minimal problems and some will have a difficult time adjusting to some of those normal developmental changes.

Clinical approaches that work for adults are largely ineffective for adolescents.

The therapist who can effectively counsel or treat an adolescent client must be one who is genuinely non-judgmental, open minded, and most importantly the therapist must be effective in building rapport and earning the trust of an adolescent or young adult during the first counseling session.

So it is crucial to find a therapist who understands those challenges, has specialized training, and has extensive experience providing clinical services for adolescent and young adult populations.
